The Virginia Household Water Quality Program aims to improve the water quality and health of Virginians with wells, springs and cisterns. We provide affordable water testing, help interpreting their water test results, and information about addressing problems.

How does it work?

Please Note: Refunds or Transfers to future programs will not be provided if you fail to either pick up your testing kit or drop off your sample before the sample collection date listed below.
  1. Pick up your sample kit at the Accomack County Extension Office, 23185 Front St, Accomac. Pick up will occur Monday, 8/18/2025, 8:30am - 4:30pm.
  2. Collect samples and drop off at the Accomack County Extension Office, 23185 Front St, Accomac. Drop off will occur on Tuesday, 8/19/2025, 8:30am - 4:30pm.
  3. Samples are analyzed at Virginia Tech. Receive your confidential results, an explanation of what they mean, and information about addressing any problems via email about 5 weeks after the sample drop off.

Testing includes:

iron

manganese

bacteria
(total coliform and E. coli)

arsenic

sodium

copper

lead

nitrate

hardness

pH

 total dissolved
solids

16 other metals and elements

Cost: $10/sample kit - SERCAP Grant Program
(comparable analysis at a private commercial lab would cost more than $300)

Register with Cash, Check, or Money Order
This system is designed to process credit card payments only. If you would like to pay by cash, check, or money order, please contact Theresa Pittman at 757-787-1361 to arrange payment and be added to the registration list.  Returned check fees are determined by the financial institution and may incur a fee up to $50.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Monday, August 18, 2025, 5:00pm
COST: $10 per kit

REFUND POLICY: No refunds will be given after 8/18/2025.  Any refunds issued will incur a $5 processing fee.
