The Virginia Household Water Quality Program aims to improve the water quality and health of Virginians with wells, springs and cisterns. We provide affordable water testing, help interpreting their water test results, and information about addressing problems.

How does it work?

Please Note: Refunds or Transfers to future programs will not be provided if you fail to either pick up your testing kit or drop off your sample before the sample collection date listed below.

1. Pick up your sample kit:

  • Christiansburg: 755 Roanoke St. Suite 1G Monday, 8/4/2025, 8:00am - 5:00pm.
  • Blacksburg: VT Campus HABB1 1230 Washington St. SW at BACK OF BUILDING FACING "Cage" parking lot Monday, 8/4/2025, 4-6pm.

2. Collect samples and drop off:

  • Christiansburg: 755 Roanoke St. Suite 1G Wednesday, 8/6/2025, 8:00am - 10:00am.
  • Blacksburg: VT Campus HABB1 1230 Washington St. SW at front of building on Washington St. Wednesday, 8/6/2025, 7:30am - 10:00am.

3. Samples are analyzed at Virginia Tech. Receive your confidential results, an explanation of what they mean, and information about addressing any problems via email about 5 weeks after the sample drop off.


Testing includes:

iron

manganese

bacteria
(total coliform and E. coli)

arsenic

sodium

copper

lead

nitrate

hardness

pH

total dissolved
solids

16 other metals and elements

Cost: $70/sample kit
(comparable analysis at a private commercial lab would cost more than $300)

Register with Cash, Check, or Money Order
This system is designed to process credit card payments only. If you would like to pay by cash, check, or money order, please contact Meredith Hoggatt at 540-382-5790 or Erin Ling at 540-231-9058 to arrange payment and be added to the registration list.  Returned check fees are determined by the financial institution and may incur a fee up to $50.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Monday, August 4, 2025, 5:00pm
COST: $70 per kit
REFUND POLICY: No refunds will be given after 8/4/2025.  Any refunds issued will incur a $5 processing fee.
