2019 Summer Shelter Institute

The Institute is a 5-day workshop for shelter staff, volunteers, and those interested in shelter dog welfare. Each day consists of four hours of lecture and four hours of hands-on work at local shelters. The Institute focuses on disseminating best practices and data-based interventions.

The Institute covers a range of topics that are important for anyone working with shelter animals to know. The topics include:

Basic Learning Theory

Measuring and Observing Behavior

Human-centric Enrichment

Dog-centric Enrichment

Behavioral Indicators of Welfare and Signs of Stress

Attendees will construct an intervention they would like to implement at their shelter and will design a measurement and observation system to measure the effects of the intervention.
