This school is a lecture series by Virginia Tech professors and DCR staff members. The first day lecture topics include- soil formation, soil survey development, landscape delineation, basic soil science, soil fertility, specific nutrient discussions to include phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur and the micronutrients. Soil sampling techniques, explanation of soil test reports, interpretation of those reports and a discussion of tissue sampling, analysis and interpretation conclude the day’s lectures.

 

The second day begins with an in-depth discussion of nitrogen and phosphorus covering their use as plant food for crop production and management strategies to minimize their impact on ground and surface water. Expanding from the use of fertilizers, organic nutrient sources are discussed in detail, including how their release of nutrients over the growing season and years following application are incorporated into crop recommendations. A discussion of the use of lime and its importance related to nutrient availability round out the fertility discussion. The economics of crop production is an important topic that keeps the planner aware that profitability is key to writing a nutrient management plans their clients use regularly. Finally, an in-depth review of the training and certification regulations finishes the program. The content of this school is representative of a mini-agronomy course.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:

In order to meet the Virginia Nutrient Management Program’s educational requirements utilizing this online training, you MUST attend the entire training. Active participation during the presentations will be noted for each participant. Participants are welcome to use their webcam.

 

Please attend from a location you have confidence will provide a reliable internet connection. Non-participation will not be accepted as meeting the education requirement because of poor internet connectivity.

 

Although presentations will be recorded for later review and for exam preparation, you MUST participate in the live school in order to have your “log time” recorded as proof of meeting the education requirement for nutrient management certification.
